Mosul Town Hall Meeting

Mosul Town Hall Meeting Two hundred and twenty people attended the two and a half hour Mosul Town Hall meeting at the Mosul Social Club on January 12. The panel consisted of the moderator, Mosul University Professor Dr. Mekdad Rahmet Allah Al Juwari, and four panelists: Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) member Sheikh Ghazi Mashal Ajil Al Yawar, Ninewa Governor Ghanem Sultan Abdullah Al Basso, Ninewa Deputy Governor Khasro Goran, and Ninewa Provincial Council member Dr. Shifa Hadi Hussain Ali Al Hamandi. The audience, comprised of a cross section of Ninewa political, civic, and social leaders, asked the panelists a range of questions focused on the November 15 agreement between the IGC and CPA, and the transitional political process. They were particularly concerned about federalism and understanding the complexities of the power structure between Baghdad and the provinces in the future Iraqi government. The audience also asked a number of pointed questions challenging the legitimacy of the IGC. Mosul is the second of the first three nationally televised town hall meetings on the November 15 agreement on the transitional political process. The first town hall was December 29 in Basrah and the next one is in Baghdad on January 28. Photo D.
