25 September 2003 Statement of Ambassador L. Paul Bremer On the Passing of Dr. Akila Al-Hashimi "Today, the people of Iraq have lost a courageous champion and pioneer for the cause of freedom and democracy. On behalf of the Coalition Provisional Authority, and all its members, I offer my heartfelt condolences to her family, her colleagues at the Governing Council and the people of Iraq. Through her steadfast commitment to a free, democratic and peaceful Iraq, Dr. Akila Al-Hashimi served as an inspiration to her nation. We mourn her passing. Yet even as we grieve, we know that her vision will live on, and that it will triumph. Today we renew our commitment to this vision as we pay tribute to Hashimi's personal courage and dedication to her work on behalf of the Iraqi people." Statement from the Prime Minister of Great Britain , Tony Blair on the Passing of Dr. Akila Al-Hashimi "I am shocked and saddened by the death of Dr Al-Hashimi. My sympathies go out to her family and friends. When we met in London in July I could see Dr Al-Hashimi had a passionate determination to build a better future for Iraq and its people. Her murderers, and those who support them, only seek to undermine the Iraqi Governing Council and destroy the efforts of all those rebuilding the country. They care nothing for Iraq . But they will not win. The work of the Governing Council, to which Dr Al-Hashimi made such a valuable and courageous contribution, will go on. Her lasting legacy will be a stable and free Iraq ." REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT IN ADDRESS TO THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY The United Nations, New York, New York THE PRESIDENT: Mr. Secretary General; Mr. President; distinguished delegates; ladies and gentlemen: Twenty-four months ago -- and yesterday in the memory of America -- the center of New York City became a battlefield, and a graveyard, and the symbol of an unfinished war. Since that day, terrorists have struck in Bali, Mombassa, in Casablanca, in Riyadh, in Jakarta, in Jerusalem -- measuring the advance of their cause in the chaos and innocent suffering they leave behind. Before I begin, I want to pay tribute to the men and women of our armed services. Leading a coalition, our armed forces delivered a military victory without precedent. In roughly three weeks they liberated a country larger than Germany and Italy combined. And they did so with forces smaller than the Army of the Potomac . They did all this while absorbing and inflicting minimal casualties. Iraqis understood that we tried to spare the innocent. After the first days of the war, only those citizens of Baghdad living close to obvious targets feared our bombing. Mr. Chairman, I know that you and all Americans hate waking up to hear a newscast that begins, "Last night another American solider was killed in Iraq ..."
