UXO is classified into 4 types representing the manner in which the weapon was originally deployed. We use these classifications to make recognition and reporting easier. It also allows us to make a reasonable estimate of the danger area around the object.
Lets look at each type.
Remember: Our goal is not to make you EOD technicians or recognition gurus. Our goal is to make you mine/UXO aware so that you can take the appropriate action relative to the threat.
The first category of UXO is placed which we have previously discussed. We will not discuss these further.
The second category of UXO is thrown, consisting mainly of hand grenades.
Grenades are well known for failing to function. It is difficult to tell if a grenade has been thrown (employed) or not. They are extremely dangerous. The middle one shown is an AT grenade utilizing a shaped charge. If this grenade goes off the shaped charge warhead may travel over a kilometer!!
As with all UXO, do not disturb grenades. The tendency may be to collect these for souvenirs or to attempt to use them. Hand grenades are commonly booby trapped. Additionally, most grenades have a 3-5 second “cook-off”, but the fuse may be replaced with a 0 second “cook-off” which means that the grenade will detonate as soon as the spoon is released.
Small, metallic looking, generally cylindrical or spherical in shape.
RECOGNITION / IDENTIFICATION FEATURES

TYPE – PROJECTED
SUBGROUPS:
Projectiles.
Mortars.
Rockets.
Guided Missiles.
Rifle Grenades.
Something that has been fired out to a distant range i.e. artillery shell, rocket, rifle grenade, etc. A large proportion of UXO falls into this classification. RPG rounds, mortar rounds and up to medium caliber artillery shells. Propelled items have at least two dangerous elements, the propellant – rocket motor, mortar propellant and shell cases as well as the warhead. Both will kill you if you are present when they go off.
Projectiles range from 20mm to 16 inches in diameter and from 2 inches to 4 feet in length. Can be explosive (HE), chemical (CS), white phosphorous (WP), illumination flares, or sub-munitions.
Many different fuse types but generally of the contact type. A small nudge might be just enough to set a UXO off.
TYPE: DROPPED
SUB-GROUPS: 3
Bombs
Dispensers
Submunitions
Bombs are generally recognized by their attachment lugs, the point of attachment to the aircraft. The are generally large, but may come in many sizes and shapes.
Dispensers, commonly referred to as CBUs, cluster bomb units, are lightly skinned munitions containing multiple smaller sub-munitions.
Submunitions are contained inside CBUs and come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. They also have a wide range of applications from area denial to armor-piecing munitions intended to attack armored formations and defensive positions.
Mark a UXO hazard area properly so that other personnel will stay away from it. Proper marking also helps EOD technicians find the area when they respond to your report.
Evacuate all nonessential personnel and equipment from a UXO hazard area. If personnel and equipment cannot be evacuated, you must take protective measures to reduce the risk to them.
Report through your chain of command all UXO hazards that affect your operations. Reporting UXO hazards will get your unit the help it needs.
If necessary, extract the unit from a hazardous area.
Standards
You will learn how to identify UXO, and the different types of UXO and Land Mines You will learn how to react to UXO, what actions to take and how to report UXO.
You are not an EOD technician or deminer There are four different kinds of UXO Task Identify the four types of UXO
